I have always been a book lover. I was the kid who had a million books on my shelf and I was constantly reaching for my next read.
In high school I completely stopped reading for fun and during college I started to miss casual reading.
I remember searching “books for women in their 20’s” and the results weren’t giving what needed to be gave! I didn’t want books that talked explicitly about the experience of womanhood. I wanted to read fictional books that explored these experiences in a more natural way.
I’m introducing you to the books that have helped shape me into the woman that I am.
This blog post is all about the books that every woman in their 20’s should read and is essentially the post that I wish I had when I first got back into reading!
The Power by Naomi Alderman is my number one favorite book. This book is about women getting the ability to kill using their bodies. It focuses on multiple characters around the world and how this new power makes men and women more equal. I love the themes in this book and exploring the ways that different societies respond to the new power.
This book may not be for everyone, there are a questionable religious movements and difficult worldly themes, but the book is absolutely beautiful.
I am recommending this book to all women in their twenties because it is a reminder to look for the power within yourself. It is also a reminder to take control of the aspects of your life that you can control and strive to be the best version of yourself.
I would be lying if I said that this wasn’t a controversial choice. To be completely transparent, the author, Rainbow Rowell, has come under a lot of scrutiny for books that she has written in the past. I do agree that the criticisms of Rainbow Rowell in some of her other books is valid. However, that doesn’t negate how much FanGirl means to me and how important of a story it is.
This book focuses on a girl on her way to college and the process of growing into adulthood while holding onto aspects of your childhood. It is such a beautiful representation of what it’s actually like to go away to college and the true experience of growing up.
There is a beautiful and wholesome romance that represents a side of first love romance that I’ve rarely seen in media and books.
I recommend this book to women in their twenties to further understand their growth into adulthood.
It Ends With Us is extremely popular right now and for very good reason! It ends with us is the first book in the duology. It focuses on a young woman who becomes a victim of domestic violence after she grew up in a home of domestic violence. The book touches on the difficult and confusing journey for domestic violence victims and really encompasses the experience of falling in love with an abusive partner.
I recommend this book to women in their twenties as a warning to help spot the signs if you’re ever in this situation. I recommend this book as a companion for anyone who is currently in this situation that needs to know they are not alone. I also recommend this book as a way to understand domestic violence victims and hopefully this understanding will lead to compassion.
The Grace Year is a story about a young woman who grows up in a society that demonizes women. At a certain age women in her society are sent to live in the woods to weed out all of their magic. The grace year is about what happens during this year. It explores female friendships, the cruelties of a society that hates women, and the complex nature of female groups.
I recommend this book to women in their twenties because it taught me a lot about the importance of female friendships and that no matter what, it is important to stick together despite living in a society that tries to tear you apart. The Grace Year taught me about the power in numbers.
