I know that at some point in your life, you’ve looked at all of the clothes in your closet and screamed I have nothing to wear and then jumped face first into your bed.
Okay, maybe you didn’t jump face first into your bed, but you’ve certainly felt like you owned 0 wearable clothes despite having a closet full of clothes. It’s because you don’t have enough basics.
After reading this post, you’ll know exactly which basics you need to make outfits you love.
The first basic piece you absolutely need in your closet is a plain tee. The type of plain tee that you purchase depends on your personal style and comfortability. It can be cropped or regular length. Crewneck or v-neck. It doesn’t matter which style of plain tee you choose, it only matter that you choose a plain tee. I personally would recommend getting a plain tee in white, black, and nude.
As you continue to grow you closet you might want to start incorporating plain tees in different colors, but this will give you a base of basic tees that you can mix and match when creating outfits. In the pictures below I have two different cropped plain tees. One is a long sleeves crewneck style and the other is a ribbed v-neck short sleeves style.
I can NOT get enough of my denim jacket. Denim jackets are perfect for so many seasons. You can style it with so many different basic items and it’s the perfect jacket to throw over an outfit. I would recommend purchasing a denim jacket in a medium wash so that it goes with everything. You can wear it with lighter colors and whites and with darker colors and blacks. As you grow your wardrobe you can always add light wash and dark wash jean jackets later on, but I personally recommend starting off with a medium wash.
There is literally no way I could make this list without putting jeans on the list. Denim Jeans are arguably more of a staple than underwear! Jeans are the basis of at least 85% of my outfits. The thing is, jeans can be an awesome way to style and express yourself but a key piece in that is making sure you’re choosing the right jean options for you. There are so many different kinds of jeans and jean trends come and go. You have to pick a style of jeans that makes you feel comfortable and confident despite whatever trend is popular right now.
So who cares if skinny jeans are going out of style! If you love the way that skinny jeans look on you, then wear the darn skinny jeans. If you love a more wider leg, then wear the wider look! Pick a style you like and run with it.
I have a mix of straight leg and skinny jeans in my collection and I interchange both of these styles depending on the look that I’m going for.
You can choose between high waisted, mid rise, and low rise jeans; You can choose between ripped and non ripped; And you can choose between wide, straight, bootcut, skinny, and jeggings!
Now, another important part about jeans is picking the right color. I’d recommend going with a dark wash and a light wash to start. And of course you need a pair of reliable Black jeans.
I did not get the hype around having a little white or a little black dress until I got a little older. I always saw people talking about it in movies and tv shows, but I didn’t get the importance of it. I finally got it and I’m gonna try my best to explain it to you.
Little black and white dresses make your life easier. You put on the dress, add some shoes and accessories, and then you’re done. You don’t have to worry about pairing two separate pieces together (top and bottom) and making sure that it looks good together. You literally have an outfit completely done for you and you look great.
The trick to making the little dress work for you, is picking a little dress that you actually like and that looks flattering on you. Someone else little dress might look amazing on them, but you try it out and settle for it and then it’s not doing what it’s intended to you.
So pick a little dress in Black and White that you absolutely love. It can be a halter, a tank, a midi, or a mini. Whatever style works for you!
Button up’s worn open like a cardigan is an easy way that you can combine a trend and an essential wardrobe item. I personally love to wear a button up with a few extra buttons open paired with blue jeans or blue shorts and gold jewelry. I always look so gorgeous and put together.
I’d definitely recommend going for a white button up and explore with shorter and longer sleeve button ups!
